Heirlooms Redesigned

Weddings Bring Out The Sentimental Feelings In All Us !

To the bride her wedding dress becomes a shrine to remind her and her family of the gift of marriage. Sometimes mothers hope that the daughter will wear her wedding dress someday. I have had the privilege of being part of many such gowns. Turning the mothers gown into a modern gown that suits the daughters vision for her own wedding is particularly exciting and heart warming.

At the initial appointment, I will view the mothers gown, then turn to the daughter and draw out of her what she envisions for her own wedding, not necessarily involving the antique gown.
We will brain storm exactly as if I was making a custom gown for her, creating a sketch of the vision. At this point I will reconsider the antique gown and make suggestions for how we can arrive at the look she wants incorporating all or parts of the mothers gowns.

Using the elements from the original as an overlay for the gown created for Great Granddaughter

The following example was unique in that the original gown was worn by the brides Great Granma in 1909, it then was worn by 7 other brides down the ages until todays Bride. The mother had inherited it and was okay with having it taken apart to use as we could the following images show the journey

  • The gown in pieces used over the new bodice
  • complete dress without the tattered liner
  • Back of Gown, some modern lace added, over silk peau de soie skirt

Bustier style bodice, silk peau do soie with antique lace over, skirt antique lace over ruffels of silk satin organza.

Notice the beautiful details from the original lace , also some new lace motifs were appliquéd over stained parts of the original lace, so the complete look was perfect. Some of the lace edges were badly freyed so the new lace was appliqued onto the edge to hide and also to tie in with the new lace around the bottom.
